The Village Cookbook: Nonnie’s Sinful Chocolate Dessert

Nonnie is in town for the week and when she is, we tend to keep our schedule light. Lots of lounging in our jams, watching trash television, and cooking up some of our favorite indulgences, including one of Non’s most famous treats — her Sinful Chocolate Dessert. Featured in The Village Cookbook, this recipe is sure to be a hit at your next gathering…or heck…make a batch to enjoy from the comfort of your couch. We are certainly not ones to judge!

Ingredients:

1 1⁄2 cups flour
8 tablespoons butter, softened

3⁄4 cup chopped nuts, plus more for garnish

16 ounces cream cheese, softened

2 (16-ounce) tubs whipped topping

2 cup *confectioners sugar

*HUGE faux pas, after combing through the cookbook 20x over, don’t ya know, we missed this edit — use CONFECTIONERS sugar!

2 (3.9-ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix

3 cups milk
Chocolate shavings (optional)

Directions:

  1. This one requires some chilling in the refrigerator, so make it ahead of time

  2. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.

  3. In a bowl, add the flour, butter, and 3⁄4 cup of chopped nuts. Combine like you’re making a pie crust, so the mixture resembles a fine crumble. Press the flour mixture into the bottom of the pan.

  4. **Bake the crust at 350 for 20 mins.

**Damnit. Missed this too! If you have the cookbook, please note, this step is not in there but it SHOULD BE. Make sure you bake the crust, layer toppings accordingly, then refrigerate. MY BAD — this is going to eat me alive (no pun intended).

  5. For the second layer, mix the cream cheese, 2 cups of whipped topping, and sugar in a bowl. Spread the mixture onto the crust.

  6. For the third layer, prepare the instant chocolate pudding using 3 cups of milk (instead of 4).

  7. Spread the pudding onto the cream cheese layer and refrigerate for at least six hours.

  8. Just before serving, heavily spread the remaining whipped topping and sprinkle chopped nuts or chocolate shavings.
